Our New Years Resolutions

Every year, people make  New Years Resolutions. Some people keep them, most don't. At C.E.M. we're making a very basic, and genuine Resolution. If you follow our blog, we are sure you've seen our blogs about being kind to others, working hard, and having a solid reputation. 

As our 2013 Resolution, we want to continue working hard towards our values that we believe are essential to being an all around good person.

We pledge to value and honor every, single day,  we have in 2013. We will forgive others and admit our own wrongdoings and attempt to ammend them the best we can. We promise to be of service to others and give back.  We’ll donate to non-profits with financial contributions and support them with our resources.  We will be grateful for all those who support us, both financially as clients and socially as supporters. We will be kind to all, and strive to be good people as we serve through our company.

Mele Cabral's Wedding: October 2012



My sister was married on Oct. 7th, 2012 at the Botanic Gardens at Chatfield in Colorado. I loved everything about the wedding. As one of the Maid-of-Honors, and de-facto wedding planners {behind my Mom who is the ultimate wedding planner}, it was a once in a lifetime experience. I could not have planned the wedding, or imagined it any better. Everything about it was, well, simply perfect.  Most importantly, I believe that it was absolutely what my sister Mele wanted.  The fact that it turned out exactly the vision she saw for her special day, alone makes it perfect.

It is only fair that every Bride believe that their wedding is the best. Well, yours might be great but this one was incredible. There are so many little details I loved, millions of in fact.  Too many of them to share here on this blog. Instead, I'll let you watch the short video and read my "Top Ten Favorite Moments List".  It is amazing  that I can watch this video with pure joy, forgetting the months and countless hours that went into every tiny detail of this day.  Between my mother, my sister and I, be rest assured not a single detail was overlooked.  

Many of you already know that blogs on this site are usually promotional or business related in nature. Although we do offer event and wedding planning services, this blog is purely written to share an amazing moment, event and experience in my life.  Perhaps later I'll write a blog about the label of the dresses, where we got our shoes, the tuxes, the cupcakes and more.  However, for now I am writing just about my favorite memories.  

And, I know, I am in a lot of the photos!  For one, it is my blog so I get to do that! =) Second, this blog is written about my sisters wedding, through my eyes.

My favorite touches, moments and memories (in no order):


1.  Spending time with my sister, The Bride.  I got to spend just about every minute with her from the morning getting up, to getting ready, to carrying her dress, taking photos, and standing right next to her at the ceremony.  These memories are irreplaceable and I will cherish them always. Thank you to my mom, Becky Cabral, and her amazing team of helpers (you know who you are). It was really a blessing that the wedding party was able to truly enjoy the day! Thank you for giving us that.




2.  
Memories of loved ones who have passed.  Tokens of our family were incorporated into many aspects of the wedding.  My favorite,  was our Great Grandmother Buscia's blue rosary.  I also really enjoyed our Grandfathers Kaipo Cabral and Donald Lucas Photos on the Brides bouquet. The rosary was given to me as a teenager, by my Grandma Buscia before she passed away. What a perfect gift for a Bride's "something blue".  After the ceremony, the rosary was pinned to the inside of the Bride's dress.  The photos of our Grandfathers, were originally mine, and were passed on to the Bride for her special day.



3.  The Groomsmen piling out of the U-Haul Truck! As Maid-of-Honor and family "go-to planner" it was my job to keep the Groomsmen going where there were supposed to be, or to at least help. After countless texts and calls from the Groomsmen asking "What should we be doing?" my Dad delivered them to me in the U-Haul truck that was used to transport the flowers.  He found  them wandering around the grounds of the wedding site. Priceless.

4.  Watching our Dad walk Mele down the aisle. What a beautiful location, with just the right view.  But more than that, my sister Mele and I have always known we have a pretty extraordinary and amazing  father.  It’s hard to put into words and  express how much I admire and love their relationship.  There is nothing more powerful for me to watch than for my Dad to give his last daughter away.  He, along with my Mother, have set the most wonderful example for us kids of what a marriage should be and what it should look like. That day, clearly, the love of God was there. If you couldn’t see it, you could feel it.

5.  Michael {The Grooms} traditional Hawaiian "Maile Lei" he wore in during the actual ceremony. The lei was worn by my Dad down the aisle, then given by my Dad to Michael as he passed my sister to him.  The lei symbolizes out-pouring and endless love.


6.   The powerful nature of Mr. Fields sermon during the wedding. This video only gives you a small glimpse into his wonderful sermon. He was perfect in both content and delivery, and it was clear that God was speaking directly through him.  There wasn't a person there who didn't learn a lesson from him that day.  I remember leaving wanting a copy of the sermon in it's entirety.  I felt so inspired and wanted to apply much of his advice to my own life. It was simply beautiful!

7.  Two families becoming one. Not only did the Cabrals and Fields families become one through the Bride and Groom that day, but our families have truly connected on a pretty incredible level.  Fathers of the Bride and Groom, Bruce and Brian, enjoy a genuine friendship and shared faith in the Lord.   Mothers of the Bride and Groom, Mary and Becky, are equally friends and support eachother’s children as if they were their own. As for myself, I gained three new siblings that day: my sisters Rachel and Rebekah and my new brother Caleb.  And baby Michael, he is the biggest blessing of all, like a nephew to me. 8.  The Dance Party at the end! Was so much fun and the perfect way to end the evening. Baby Michael cut up the rug and just about everyone danced! I wish the party could have gone on all night.





9. My date Joe! Joe was without a doubt one of my favorite guests (duh!). Thankfully, he was willing to deal with a wedding planner, Maid-of-Honor, crying mess,  all rolled into one. Thank you for keeping me stay sane, reminding me to eat, dancing with me and for just having fun with me.  P.S. Your suit looked amazing!


10. Our awesome Uncle Jack.  And of course, if you were there, who can forget our amazing Uncle Jack taking photos on his iPad =). We were so glad our Aunt Mary and Uncle Jack were able to join us. Love you guys!

PR TIP Tuesday: Don’t Cancel Your Instagram Account Just Yet

With the recent purchase of Instagram by Facebook on Monday, Dec. 17th, 2012, Tuesday brought on some major changes to Instagram that seemed to be just too much for some users.  Instagram is the popular photo sharing site on social media.  Members threatened to cancel accounts in droves and the hashtag, #Instapocalypse was even trended on Twitter today.

The intended changes were meant to make Instagram more user friendly on Facebook, and were meant to help cut down on spam.   The updated changes would kick in Jan. 16th, 2013.  And, here’s the kicker, they put some tricky language in the new terms of service that transferred rights from the users who uploaded the images to Instagram.  Essentially, this new policy would make it where Instagram  could potentially sell your images to companies for profit. For example, you could post a photo of your dog on Instagram, and the platform could take that photo, and under their new Terms of Service, sell it to a company like Kibble and Bits.  Next thing you know your photo could be on the cover of Kibble and Bits dog food without compensating you a penny or asking your permission.  Not to worry, this language was removed from the new Terms of Service by the end of the day, due to user outrage. 

Instagram’s initial updated Terms of Service were absolutely alarming, but I don’t think it’s reason enough to cancel your account just yet. Instagram’s willingness to listen and change it’s policies based on feedback, quickly and efficiently gives me hope that they will come to a mutually acceptable middle ground between the company and it’s users.  I think users can continue to be confident that Instagram will continue to address major complaints.    Not to mention, I think there is plenty of “hype” surrounding the issue that will soon subside.  Most of the changes to their Terms of Service were over hyped up by tech journalists and poorly communicated by Instagram’s public relations team, exacerbating the existing problem.

Instagram has proven to be a powerful tool for marketing and PR pro’s thus far. My advice is hang on to your account, and ride it out until at least Jan. 16, 2013.    If Instagram doesn’t  shape up their terms of service by the 16th,  then go ahead and switch to another platform, like Flicker. But I encourage you to wait out the storm at the very least, or sample the updated platform when it launches on Jan. 16th

I can’t guarantee what roll Instagram will play in our company’s future, or how we will or won’t integrate the updated platform with our clients. What I can say as that we will at least give the platform a shot, and try it out for ourselves.  Expect a follow up PR Tip Tuesday addressing the updated Instagram on a Tuesday following Jan. 16th, 2013.

Every week for PR Tip Tuesday we bring your tips you can implement for your business.  This week, we bring you Social Media Tips 101. We don’t consider ourselves social media experts at C.E.M., but we use social media on a daily basis to help support and promote various clients. Here are some basic tips we can recommend to anyone who uses social media in business.



  • Keep it positive! If you use your social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) for business it is not the place to be negative. No political rants, attacks or other negative discussions that will give you a bad reputation. Trust us, people notice.

  • Cross Promote. Cross promote your different social media accounts to gain followers. That being said, don’t just simply repost the exact same content to each platform, keep the content on each platform relevant and fresh.

  • Engage. Engage with our fans, or followers. Don’t just post or tweet at them. Post or tweet with them. 

  • Offer customer service.  Use your social media pages for customer service.  Apologize publicly to customers and offer solutions, discounts, etc.  Personalize the customer service experience, signing off with your name when possible. Strive to reply in a friendly and helpful manner.

  • Don’t buy followers or fans. It’s just not worth it. They do nothing for increased engagement.  Take the time to grow your fan base organically.

  •  Experiment with Facebook promoted posts and ads. We don’t recommend you put a lot of money into this because Facebook has changed the metrix of their platform drastically this year, but we recommend at least experimenting with it.  Spend $5.00 and see if you an ad generates results for your brand. Kissmetrics.com suggest you “Experiment with Promoted Posts, Sponsored Stories, and regular advertising. Facebook advertising has changed a lot this year. You have lots of different options – including the ability to promote posts on your personal profile! Try different types of advertising to help build likes and engagement for your fan page as well as sending visitors who click on your ads to your website or landing pages.”

  • Update content daily.  Don’t let your Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Twitter pages, etc. go to long without an update. If you leave your accounts stagnant, people stop checking back.

  • Update the look of your pages for 2013.  Change and update logos, photos, headers photos, layouts, etc. to keep your page fresh and up to date.

  • Use Twitter for networking. Network with brands, clients, friends, your favorite celebrities and more on Twitter. Engage with them organically showing interest in their tweets, re tweet their posts and engage with them. Genuine engagement will get you noticed by them, we promise!

  • Use endorsements on LinkedIn. Endorse others skills and request that they endorse you as well.

After a recent visit to New Day Northwest, I was gifted a copy of Raphaele Sollecito’s book “Honor Bound, My Journey to Hell and Back with Amanda Knox.”  I have to admit; when the case was going on I didn’t much pay attention to it.   However, after watching his compelling extended interview on New Day Northwest, I decided to read his book. I was astonished at the blatant incompetency on the part of the Italian justice system, and the complete lack of evidence linking either Raffaele or Amanda to the crime. If you have even the slightest interest in the case, I highly suggest you read his book. It is well organized, well written and extremely informational.
In case you missed it, Amanda Knox, and now ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were released last year when their sentences were overturned due to lack of evidence, after which she immediately returned to her family in Seattle, Washington where she has since kept a low profile.
Now, Amanda is releasing a book of her own, and I will certainly read it.  HarperCollins will publish the memoir of Amanda Knox, the American student accused of murdering her British roommate while studying in Italy in a few months. Her memoir will be called “Waiting to Be Heard,” a reference to her prolonged interment in an Italian jail during a convoluted and at times sloppy trial that eventually saw her and boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito freed in the case of the brutal 2007 murder of Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy.  Knox, a native of Seattle, reportedly earned $4 million to write about her adventures through the Italian criminal justice system.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Meredith Kercher.   She left our world all too soon. R.I.P Meredith.

Sephora and Pantone announced the SEPHORA + PANTONE UNIVERSE™ 2013 Color of the Year beauty collection featuring PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald, which will be available exclusively at Sephora in March 2013. Sharing a strong passion for how color can transform a face, mood or even an attitude, Sephora and Pantone continue to change how consumers wear, feel and think about color through the second annual radiant and modern Color of the Year beauty collection.

Spring 2013 Trend Colors
TME shared their photo of what Spring 2013 Trend Colors will be as determined by Pantone.  Pantone has standardized color selection for the fashion and design industry.  The colors for Spring 2013 include: Red, Peony, Gerber Daisy, Lemon Drop, Green Calcite, Jade, Olive, Ink, Nude and Coppertone.
Jade and peony are my personal favorites. Lemon drop and green calcite will be difficult for the average woman to wear, as they are hard colors to match to skin tone.  Red seems to be classic almost any time of year.

Mrs. King County Joins the NW Beauty Magazine Team
NW Beauty Magazine has a new editor and writer who has joined Editor-In- Chiefs Dawn Hunter and Jessica Hoffman. Her name is Larissa, or better known as Reese by family and friends. Larissa has been featured in many blogs worldwide for years sharing her opinions and expertise to everything from beauty to philanthropy. She enjoys being a part of the social scene.
She is a married mother of three, who’s youngest was diagnosed with severe autism at two and is now high functioning and doing extremely well.  Through her struggles she found a passion in helping non-profits raise money.  She is involved with many non-profit organizations including Autism Speaks, SeeYourImpact, Queen, It’s a New Day, American Heart Association and the Girl Scouts.  She recently left the corporate world to start her own event planning company, Unzipped Experience, helping non-profits put on events at little or no cost to them.   Larissa also maintains her own blog as well as blogging for Girl Power Hour.
She currently holds the title of Mrs. King County and will be competing for the title of Mrs. Washington America in February 2013 and hopes to continue her passion for helping others by using her title to promote causes near and dear to her heart.   Through the pageant, she is hoping to use her titles to better her favorite charities and the world. One of her heroes is Helen Keller, whom Larissa aspires to be like.  Larissa says that Keller is  a “woman that people only saw for his disabilities for a long time!  She overcame diversity and through her disabilities was able to change the way our country does things. She is amazing and is definitely my inspiration.”

Maile Cabral, the newest editor to join NW Beauty Magazine, has started strong adding a lot of flavor to this amazing magazine. Her experience spans the country covering beauty to the hilt. She works with many beauty related clients with her business Cabral Edwards Management (C.E.M.), a boutique PR firm and event planning company.   She has a wonderful business partner, Kassie Edwards.  Their clientele includes celebrities, their stylists and designers of beauty and fashion products. She is an active member of Girl Power Hour, and maintains a wildly popular “Celeb Buzz” blog for them.   She also edits and maintains her company blog, Pink Energy for C.E.M.   Maile has had her articles published in DLIST Magazine including Cover features and Blog articles.  Maile is also a fashionsta at heart!  She was an integral member of the Seattle Fashion Week 2011 team and an early member of  Metropolitan Fashion Week’s team in Seattle.  Maile received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Kansas in 2005 as a member of the Deans List.
Instead of the typical bio I decided to ask Maile the important questions we all want to know from a beauty industry leader. Here is what she had to say:
Larissa: What made you interested in writing for NW Beauty?
Maile: I have been writing for Girl Power Hour for some time now, and realized I had so much more I wanted to write about. After being approached by Dawn Hunter to join the team, I agreed! As a publicist I am always writing for them, pitching articles and putting out press releases. Being a writer just seems to come naturally in my industry.
Larissa: Tell us a bit about your beauty experience.
Maile: When I was younger, starting at age 16 I was an agency represented model. I got to work with amazing brands like Vivienne Westwood and Nike, and fell in love with fashion way back then.  After leaving modeling and growing into adulthood, I never lost my love for fashion and the runway. And of course, fashion and beauty go hand in hand!
Larissa: Let’s get down to business. People really want to know what your must have beauty item is…do tell.
Maile: As you know, I am constantly on the go. Whether it’s traveling for meetings, events, etc., I am never in one place for very long. I highly suggest everyone keep a bag of miniature travel essentials to go in their car. I do, and I use it all the time!
Larissa: Are you the kind of girl who can’t leave the house without make-up?
Maile: No way! I am a girly girl at heart and I love wearing makeup, but I don’t wear it every day. Most days you can find me with a clean face, moisturizer and my hair in a ponytail.  When I participate in special events or photoshoots, I love to have my makeup done professionally. I have used Heather Lopez-Thorpe a lot in the past and recently I have used Sequioa Leopold from My Flawless Beauty Bars.  Both of them can work wonders with makeup!
Larissa: What is your go-to style accessory not make-up related?
Maile: Hair accessories! I love to change my look with headbands, pins, flowers, feathers, etc. You can create a statement so easily with hair accessories!
Larissa: If you won a million dollar shopping spree to Nordstrom what would be the first thing you’d buy?
Maile: The FIRST thing? That is so hard. I would buy a custom made suit with a well-fitting white button up shirt.  Well-structured women’s shirts are so hard to find. After that, I’d buy a killer splurge pair of shoes.
Larissa: What is your favorite brand of make-up?
Maile: I have lots of favorites, and I am always trying new brands. However, DIOR lipgloss and eye shadow colors seem to work really well with my complexion.  Chanel skin makeup is my favorite, their foundations are to die for. If I need a special color for something, I’ll shop MAC, they have every color imaginable!
Larissa: What is your favorite brand of clothing?
Maile: Again, I have so many favorites. Classically, VALENTINO always  puts out couture designs that I fall in love with.  Recently, I have been crushing over Bri Seeley’s Escape Collection.  There are a few pieces I like from Cameron Levin’s Ruby Collection that I like as well, but I’ve never tried them on.
