My Favorite Prabal Gurung for Target Pieces

The Nepalese-American designer lends his innovative eye to a new Target line, in stores Feb.  10th.   Target is partnering with Prabal Gurung, a widely celebrated designer to introduce a limited-edition collection of affordable women’s apparel and accessories, including handbags, shoes and jewelry.

My favorite look is “Look 01” in the official Prabal Gurung for Target LookBook. This outfit is stunning with a vibrant floral pattern on this sleeveless blouse, which is a signature Gurung look .  The blouse perfectly accents the lace-bottomed yellow skirt. The black and white wedge sandals help elevate a fun daytime look into a sleek getup for a night out. The colors are spot on for trends and the fit looks like it could be flattering on a variety of figures.

My Style: My Outfit From Bellevue Fashionista Shoot
I have been getting tons of questions about my outfit for the Bellevue Fashionista Shoot organized by Rebecca Klein of Eastside Fashion.  This posting details all the information I could pull together about my look including: brands, pricing details, website links to brand, brand descriptions and the location I purchased the items from. Honestly, a color palette and look book was sent to us for inspiration before the shoot. I was really nervous and didn’t have anything in my closet that matched the desired look, so I headed to Nordstrom, and Nordstrom Rack to pull together and purchase the perfect outfit.
My favorite part about this outfit, the hair and the makeup was the fact that I wore it for a photo shoot in the morning, then headed out for the day to a girlfriends birthday party out wine tasting. There are not a lot of outfits or looks you can take from a photoshoot, straight to the street.  Each of these pieces has become a favorite in my closet, getting tons of mileage and wear.

PR Tip Tuesday: Keeping Promises

Our PR Tip Tuesday this week is a very simple concept and won't require a long post. Today we want to bring up keeping the promises that you make.  All to often in business, and in life, we promise people something, something we never deliver.  Saying "yes" then never following through only results in disappointment and even worse, resentment from the person you promised something to. If you're going to make a promise, that is great! Just make sure you follow through with it. If you can't for some reason, contact the person directly, explain as honestly as possible why you are unable to, and offer to make ammends somehow.   Another way to avoid making promises and breaking them is to learn how to say "no".  If someone asks a favor and you know right off the bat you're not going to be able to complete the task they as of you, simply and politely tell them no, that you are unable to. Follow up with a positive remark and a request to keep in touch in case you can assist in the future.

Our challenge to you is to go out and find one thing you can do for someone today, take action and deliver. We also challenge you to find someone you had promised something to, and apologize and offer to make ammends. We all make mistakes.  Our challange for you tomorrow, is to give thoughtful consideration on your ability to deliver before making any promises or saying "yes" to people in the future.

Most of you probably think I write this Celebrity Buzz blog because I am celebrity obsessed or something like that. This couldn’t be father from the truth. I write because I love it.  It is my passion. My release, my art.  Some of you like to dance, some like to make clothes or some other hobby, I write.  When I first approached Darnell Sue, founder of Girl Power Hour about writing for GPH 2 years ago, I asked, “What topics are yet to be covered?” She replied that no one was covering celebrities yet, and I jumped at the chance, agreeing to write the Celeb Buzz Blog.
Girl Power Hour was the first organization that gave me a platform to write on a public forum.  From here, I have written a DLIST Magazine cover article, DLIST Magazine blogs, articles for countless blogs and several other local magazines.   My topics have ranged from all things celebrity, to personal interviews, fashion, event coverage, beauty topics, charity reviews and more.  These published articles are great, but I by no means consider myself a professional journalist. I’m a girl with a passion, doing what she loves. Sure, I can write technical things, like Press Releases, by this by no means makes me a journalist.
Anytime you write a blog, a magazine article or anything posted on a public forum, you open yourself up to criticism.  Personally, I love this criticism. Since I am not a professionally trained journalist, I take this criticism as an opportunity to learn, to grow, and to better perfect my “art”.  At the same time, this willingness to learn doesn’t mean I’m not human. Occasionally I’ll get a piece of criticism about my writing that is particularly hard to swallow.  I shared a recent criticism with Darnell and she responded, “I think your posts are great Maile… you are growing and learning and becoming really good. Don’t quit!”
Darnell’s encouragement has helped bring me to where I am today.  I plan on taking her advice wholeheartedly, and I’m not going to quit writing. I’m going to take whatever criticism I can get, learn from it, and become even better.  Thank you to everyone, including Darnell, who has supported my blog, shared a link, or encouraged me. I appreciate it greatly.  When I write I am doing what I love, and I hope that whatever you are doing, you love doing as well.

Kacie’s Green Smoothie
As 2013 has kicked off I can already tell that it is going to be the BEST yet and a busy one at that.  I’ve made it my resolution to stay healthy from the inside so that it shows on the outside to ensure that my confidence is always at its best.
To do this, I’m starting from the inside every morning! I’ve made it my goal to start the day with a prayer to God asking him for guidance and strength.  Then I’ll charge up with my “Green Smoothie.” What you put in your body shows on the outside! I want my skin to be healthy and shine (“bright like a diamond”). I fire up the Magic Bullet to get the job done.

Green Smoothie
1/2 frozen banana
3 cups of Kale
6-8 oz. of Coconut water (depending on consistancy you prefer)
Blend all ingredients together and enjoy!  If you need a little more flavor add in a dash of cinnamon! Does the trick every time!
I also think its important to get in as much exercise as possible, but with a hectic schedule everyday this can sometimes make it to the bottom of the list.  I’ve made it a point to park a little farther from the office everyday to get a few extra steps in, good for the soul and the waist line, and then attend Pilates 3 days a week and Spin class 2 days a week.  Anything else on top of that is just icing on the cake!
Two of the three components are taken care of, now we need to work on the outside, which with combining with the others will make this the most balanced year to date.  I’m adding a few things to my beauty regimen this year! And they all begin with teeth whitening! I was so excited to get my whitening trays this year and to use my Philips Zoom white formula. BUT this can be pricy, so the alternative that I’ve found as equally effective is Crest 3D White Whitestrips Advanced Vivid. No matter what, you can be confident everyday with a pearly white smile, make-up or not!

Disappointment In Business


Yesterday we posted an article to Poshy Magazine about dealing with "NO" in business and wanted to repost it here.  And, we'd love to hear your thoughts and feedback...

As a publicist, you often hear “no” more than you ever hear “yes” and when the dreaded NO comes out you have to learn to deal with the disappointment.  When you are pitching stories, product placement or interviews, some prospects will tell you “yes” right away, some will respond “yes” after considerable discussion and sometimes you wear hear “no”.  And even worse than a “no” is a no response.

I have had to learn over the course of my career, to take the emotion out of the “no” and realize it's just business.  It’s simple math. To get to those “YES"s you have to hear the “NO”s, and lots of them.  Lucky for me, I am learning to pick up after hearing a “no” and relentlessly going after my “yes”.

Another thing I have learned is that I will never let one “no” stop me. One of my favorite quotes is, “Don’t let today’s disappointments cast a shadow on tomorrow’s dreams.” ~Unknown” I know that all sales people, even outside of PR know what I am talking about. In fact, I am sure the most successful sales people; hear “no” all the time!  Don’t let fear stop you. Once you hear that “no”, reflect on it, learn from it, pick up our chin and keep going. You’ll be glad you did.

If you get a “no” that is particularly hard for you to swallow, consider discussing it with a mentor. I myself am human, and I am not immune to having emotions when I hear no. My best remedy I experienced recently when I had a “no” that was difficult for me to process, was confiding in a friend. She reminded me that sometimes things are not meant to be and when one door closes, you‘ve created the space for another to open.  I have to believe that this in particular no happened for a reason, and that I am better off for it.  I decided to reflect on this experience and here is what I came up with as my best tips for dealing with disappointment:

PR Basics and Press Conference Tips

Press conferences are a great tool for getting a message about your brand or company out to the media in a quick and efficient way.  Rather than sending out costly press releases, or making hundreds of individual journalist appointments, you can get your information across to a roomful of people all at once. Here are our tips from CEM to have the most beneficial press conference, and how to best get your message across in an effective manner.  We’ve assembled some great tips for someone who is well versed in press conferences as well as the press conference newbie.

·       Stay calm! Stay calm and focus on facts over emotion (more on this later). Staying calm tells the journalists in the room they are not going to be able to get an emotional reaction from you, perhaps getting you to say something you will wish later you hadn’t said.

·       Don’t sit! Stand rather than sit. A table is a barrier between you and the reporters.  Sitting also suggests a psychological lack of energy. Not to mention, a podium is the best way to allow yourself to read notes, while allowing media to attach recording devices or microphones.

·       No family! Press conferences are a place of business. Keep your personal family and friend attendance to a minimum.

·       Keep control! Control your message. Plan ahead and know exactly what message you want to be sent. The less you say, the more likely it is the news will publish your intended sound bites. The more you say gives the reporters more to decipher, and increases the chances of your message being misunderstood or misinterpreted.  Keep your message as short and simple as possible, journalists are busy. You don’t want to irritate them by keeping them too long.

·       Admit your mistakes.  If you are holding a “crisis press conference” admit your mistakes. Honesty is always the best policy. If you attempt to “throw other people under the bus” it will only make you look bad and will almost always come back to haunt you. Telling the truth will not harm your reputation as much in the end as lying will.   The key to admitting your mistakes is atoning for your wrong doings, admitting to them and looking forward to a bright future. In this situation Forbes.com says that “you can’t reverse the past, but you can attempt to have an honorable future.”

·       Use facts instead of emotions.   There is a time and place to be emotional and a press conference is almost always not one of them. Remember, journalists and the media are to report on facts, and in most cases not emotions.  Keep a level  head, you’ll almost always regret getting too overly emotional and reacting emotionally at a press conference.

·       Tell the truth!  Especially in crisis press conferences, The best way to deal with a crisis and do damage control is to face it head on and come clean. Not a lot of people like a cheater — but no one likes a bold-faced liar. We all make mistakes but admitting to them is the first step in repairing a tarnished reputation” (Forbes.com).   If you’ve wronged someone or something, you’re better off admitting it.  If you don’t, and the crisis is big enough, it will come out eventually. Better from you than a “beat writer”.

·       Be helpful.  Try to answer as many questions as you can. If you are unable to answer a question, tell the media you’ll have the appropriate department or person answer that question at a later time, preferably as soon as possible. There is nothing worse than a journalist who feels ignored. They’ll try to find the answer on their own, and may discover an answer, different from the one you want them to provide.

·       Consult a professional! We highly suggest you select a team of professionals to advise you before going into any press conference.  Have a plan for how you will answer any difficult questions. Having a plan will help you control the ultimate message you are trying to send. It is not weak to be advised by a PR team on how to best get your message to the media. Trust us, especially when communicating any type of crisis communications, you’ll be glad you did!

·       Keep speakers to a minimum.  People speak and interpret things differently, the more people that speak, the more cloudy your vision or message will become. Send the person with the most public relations experience out to speak. If you have an inexperienced team, make sure they have a strong PR individual advising them ahead of time to help them prepare. Assigning one person to address the press also cuts down on the likelihood that you and your company / brand will be misquoted.

·       Remember your audience! Don’t let the “beat reporter” in the front row get you flustered. Remember that the reporter is not your final audience. Keep in mind that the reporter is simply your avenue for getting your message across.  Keep your message as direct and down to earth as possible, so that the key people watching the press conference or reading quotes in the paper the next day understand your message.

·       Don’t play favorites with reporters! If you are well versed in press conferences, then we know that in your career, you have developed favorites or non favorites when it comes to reporters.  We know that some reporters have more influence than others, but don’t play favorites, it will only back fire later on. Treat all members of the media courteously and with even keeled respect.  Journalists can become your best friend or your worst enemy, attempt to avoid that by being professional at all times, under all circumstances.

·       Keep an eye on that “beat writer” in the front row.  Journalists in general are very good at spinning things, especially the one’s known as “beat writers”.  These type of writers are experts at spinning your message and trying to infer either a positive or negative response from you.  Be aware of their methods, and prepare in advance for their questions with your PR advisor.

Press conferences can be a great way to give out information about your brand, company or changes to your company. We cannot stress enough how important it is to plan for them in advance, and to have a strong PR professional advising you on the best way to get your message across.  A press conference is like any other media interview, journalists want information, and you have to make a plan to get them the exact information it is that you want them to have.
