Blogger Partnership: What Brands Need To Know!

Our Advice For Working With Bloggers

At C.E.M. it seems like every marketing project we have includes blogger outreach in some shape or form. Whether is sending them a press release encouraging them to write about a high profile event or partnering with them to write about certain fashion brands, we are always in contact with bloggers.

We’ve had tremendous success working with bloggers posting articles about our topics and even helping our clients make sales by giving bloggers specialized and traceable discount codes to help convert blog posts to sales.  Very often, people ask us, “How do you do it?” Well, we can’t share our exact recipe for success but we are happy to share a list of our top list of things to do and not to do when partnering with bloggers.

1.      What’s in it for them?  Don’t expect to just blast a blogger and pitch them to write about your event, brand or business and offer nothing in return! If you can’t pay your bloggers for any number of reasons, why not offer them free product?  Give them free product for themselves, and free product for them to give away on their blog.

2.      Support your bloggers! Give the bloggers you partner with a shout out on your social media networks. Thank them for their blog coverage and post a link to their blog.

3.     Know your market.  Only make pitches to bloggers that make sense. Don’t waste your time and theirs by pitching something that doesn’t make sense. If you own a woman’s fashion line, don’t contact a male sports blogger, it just doesn’t work. Take the time to research your blogger list, and make sure it fits your demographic.

4.     Have thick skin! Many bloggers believe that their time is money. If they believe you are wasting their time, they won’t be happy and will let you know. Be sure not to take it personally, just know that some bloggers won’t reply nicely to you.  Remove them from your contact list, and move on.  Plus, some bloggers have an ego, just like any other group of people.

5.     Get help.  Don’t know how to connect with bloggers? Let the pro’s help you. Partner with a boutique PR firm like Cabral Edwards Management to help you get your program up and running.

6.     Establish upfront what you expect.  Make a clear contract with your blog partners of what you expect from them, what you will give them, and all the details they need.  If possible meet with them in person.

7.     Give them correct info to blog about! Take this seriously! Some bloggers have 60,000 to millions of hits per blog post. Don’t underestimate their reach. There is nothing worse than a blogger who doesn’t have all the details or who reports on wrong data that you supplied them!

8.     Track your success!  Make sure to keep in touch with your bloggers and keep track of their coverage.  Use traceable bitly links so you can get information on how many clicks their link gets, where the hits are and more information about where the hits are coming from. This is valuable market information on your audience as a brand!

9.     What to do when a blogger goes silent on you? Nothing.  Every once in a while you’ll send product to a blogger, or even pay them for a post and you never hear back from them again. That’s ok! Don’t take it personal, just take the relationship for what it is and move on. Nothing good will come from blasting them in public forums or social media, just thank them for what they did, let them keep whatever compensation or gifts you sent them, and move on.

Earth Day Beauty: MyTop 9 Earth Friendly Product Obsessions

For Earth Day, I wanted to figure out and share some earth friendly beauty products. After a little bit of research, and asking around, here are 8 really great products that support repsonsible packaging, have great giving back programs, are eco friendly with fewer preservatives and parabens, and support green initiatives in their communities. Whether you're a 100% eco girl all the time or a "naturalite" who loves eco but just can't be eco all the time due to a busy lifestyle, these products should work for you. I have to admit, I haven't tried any of them yet, but I look forward to trying each of them. Why not buy beauty products that are great and give back? It's a win-win for us all.

When it comes to being green, New York is way ahead of the game. Bond No. 9 is celebrating the great state’s environmental smarts with this metro-sophisticated eau de parfum in fresh green packaging. A percentage of proceeds is donated toward the State of New York’s “green” initiatives – park cleanups, preservation programs, etc. This product is the perfect way to celebrate Earth Day and spend your money where it counts!
Price: $175, Available at Saks and

Not only is it paraben and sulfate free, this incredibly unique product offers UVA and UVB protection all the while giving your skin a beautiful glowing tan. Packaged in a tube that is recyclable and 30% PCR, all Whish products are proudly tested on us, not animals™. It is no wonder The Skin Cancer Foundation has given the SPF15 Self Tanner its Seal of Approval.  I've tried this product. It goes on really smooth, has a great smell, and the packaging is super high end. I am quickly becoming a WHISH addict!

Urban Decay Good Karma Brushes

Lucky for us all, Urban Decay offers permanent good karma credit with a variety of high performance, artist-quality, cruelty free, vegan and eco-friendly makeup brushes. Each brush comes encased in a magnetic box fashioned out of recycled egg cartons, the super-soft synthetic brush hair (doesn’t hold on to stinky bacteria the way porous animal hair does) is made from recycled PET bottles, and the sleek gunmetal brush handles are recycled aluminum. Finally, a brush line with actual names rather than numbers tells you which brush to use for what/where. Whether you are a makeup novice or junkie, there is a Good Karma Brush (12 in all) to suit any and every beauty need.

Unlike many beauty and skin offerings on the market, all Kari Gran products are created using natural, organic, sustainably-harvested materials to minimize environmental impact. While other brands are filled with harsh parabens, toxins and up to 80 percent water to preserve shelf life, Kari Gran breaks the mold by putting the environment, product quality and consumer satisfaction at the forefront every step of the way.  Their Essential Serum is a potent blend of 15 plant and essential oils known for their nourishing properties, plus a boost of natural Vitamin E, providing customizable levels of moisture to the skin. The Essential Serum is the quintessential multi-tasker; it can be used twice daily, both as a morning and evening moisturizer. For a nightly treatment, double the amount you use during the day and apply it to the face, neck, décolleté and to the eye area for an allover effect. In addition, for women who use mineral powder foundation, the essential serum can be mixed in the hand with the make-up to create a liquid tinted moisturizer.

Shopping The Kate Young For Target Collection

Last Sunday, on April 14th I was one of the first in line to shop the Kate Young for Target collection.  I stopped in and bought one her necklaces to add to my Sunday morning brunch outfit.  First stop in her collection? Jewelry.

I got the gold Arrow Heart Pendant to add to my little jewelry necklace party. A total steal at $19.99.  Target only stocked two of each type of the jewelry. I’m sure this is by design by Target, to create a “buy it now mentality”. One where you have to buy it now, out of fear it might not be available later. If this collection is anything like the Prabal Gurung capsle collection, they’ll be quietly re-stocking the shelves at a later date.  If this is not the case, perhaps the bulk of the merchandise went to other more metropolitan stores with more sales. Either way, if there’s a piece you’ve got your eyes on… get it now, before it sells out.

My next stop after jewelry? The clothing collection.

If you want pieces from the Kate Young for Target collection, you may want to shop it before it’s gone! I was one of the first shoppers at my local Target on Sunday when the collection launched.  Many of the pieces only had ONE garmet in each size for any particular design.

More about the Kate Young For Target Capsule Collection
Kate Young – one of the most influential celebrity stylists in the fashion industry – has introduced a limited-edition collection of women’s apparel and accessories, including handbags, shoes and jewelry.

Young began her career at Vogue magazine. After spending time assisting Anna Wintour and styling the first cover of Teen Vogue, she quickly transitioned into one of the most sought-after stylists in the fashion industry. Her clientele includes Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams, Jennifer Connolly, Rachel Weisz and more. In addition to celebrity styling, Young consults for various labels and often styles runway shows for designers such as Jason Wu, Derek Lam, Nina Ricci, Peter Som, Yigal Azrouël and Vena Cava. No stranger to Target, Young styled a number of the brand’s campaigns, such as Jason Wu for Target, as well as Target’s well-remembered vertical fashion show in New York back in 2005. In 2012, Young topped The Hollywood Reporter’s list of the 25 most powerful stylists, recognizing her ingenuity and expertise in the fashion industry.

Kate Young for Target is modern and versatile, encompassing a collection of occasion dressing and standalone separates that mix and match to create endless ensembles. Ranging in price from $29.99 to $89.99 for apparel and $14.99 to $49.99 for jewelry, handbags and shoes, Kate Young for Target is available now, April 14 through May 2, 2013, or while supplies last, at most Target stores and

Helpful Information About Boston + How You Can Help

In light of the recent events in Boston, C.E.M. has shut down for the day.  Our hearts, minds and prayers are with the victims and their families.

We encourage PR professionals, business owners and brands to be mindful while sharing on Social Media and otherwise today. Keep in mind sensitivity is at an all time high.

We wanted to share some valuable information for those searching for it.

How you can help

House someone who is displaced! has set up a Google Doc for those who need a place to stay or have a place to house runners who can't get back to their hotels or fly out of the city.

Officials are recommending you try texting loved ones, as bandwidth issues are clogging cell reception. If you still can't get through, the Boston Police has provided two phone numbers. If you're looking for family members, call 617-635-4500. To report information: 800-494-TIPS.

Google's Person Finder: Boston Marathon Explosions is another resource. It provides two services: "I'm looking for someone" and "I have information about someone," and allows people to cross-check their info.

The American Red Cross also provides a "Safe andWell" page, where people without phone access can register to let friends and relatives know they're okay.

If those don't provide results, you can try the BostonMarathon's Athlete Tracker, and type in your person's name. It should show what time the runner finished and help you gauge where they were at the time of the explosions.

Where you can donate blood:

If you're in Boston and looking for a way to help, try theRed Cross for a list of locations where they accept blood donations. One center not far from the explosions is on 274 Tremont Street. It may be useful to call ahead and ask about capacity — 617-556-2200.

You can also call ahead to Boston Hospitals, listed here, to find out if they need blood as well.

Where to go for facts:

If you're overwhelmed by the onslaught of (sometimes dubious) reports coming through Twitter and news sites, check out The BostonPolice Department's Twitter feed for quick reliable updates as they come in.

Additionally, the New York Times has removed its paywall and is allowing people to access all stories about the marathon as they develop. And the Boston Globe — the city's biggest newspaper — is providing wall-to-wallcoverage, and has tons of reporters and photographers on the ground.
